Organizational Profile:
Background
The Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) is a member of the International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Federation), the world
’s largest humanitarian organization, providing assistance without
discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or
political opinions. The JRCS was founded in 1877 and was one of the five
National Red Cross Societies that took the initiative in establishing the
Federation in 1919.
Organizational structure
The JRCS'national headquarters is located in Tokyo, supporting a
nationwide network of chapters throughout all of the 47 Japanese
prefectures. The JRCS has Her Majesty the Empress as Honorary President,
and other members of the Imperial Family as Honorary Vice-Presidents.
The President, while representing and chairing the Board's meetings,
assumes the function of the top executive, supervising the Society's
day-to-day activities through its secretariat.
Activities (General)
The JRCS undertakes extensive activities in the following areas:
- International Aid
- Domestic disaster relief
- Medical services (management of 92 Red Cross hospitals nationwide)
- Nursing education
- Blood programme (management of 77 Red Cross Blood Centres nationwide)
- Social welfare services (management of 31 social welfare institutions nationwide)
Activities (International)
In response to international relief appeals from the Federation and the
ICRC, the JRC aims to provide maximum possible support in the form of
personnel, material and financial assistance. The last major relief
operations include providing aid to victims of the earthquakes in India,
El Salvador, medical services for the people affected by humanitarian
crisis in and around Afghanistan, orthopaedic programmes for landmine
victims in Cambodia. The JRCS is also active in assisting mid/long-term
development support (bilateral and through the Federation) in the fields
of disaster preparedness (Bangladesh, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia,
China, Pacific Region Caribbean Region), health and blood services (Nepal,
Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines), and institutional/resource
development of National Societies (Mongolia, Myanmar, Pacific Region)
(as of December 2001)
