Organizational Profile:

AAR was founded in 1979 as the first Japanese private relief organization for refugees. Since then it has been dedicated to the emergency relief and development assistance for refugees, internally displaced persons and vulnerable population worldwide, and addressing issues of major concern. Its activities are based on the philosophy “to spread the good-will of Japanese people over the worldEwith no political, religious or ideological affiliations.

The headquarters located in Tokyo is run by approximately 10 regular staff members and over 50 volunteers. It currently has local offices in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Zambia, Mozambique, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan, regularly sending aid workers to those and many other countries.

AAR is also actively engaged in activities for the eradication of anti-personnel landmines. As one of the 15 members of the Coordinating Committee of International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), it takes part in landmine monitoring and funding activities, as well as publishes a Campaign Picture Book Series and organizes conferences for public awareness.

Major Activities and Achievements:

  • Providing relief supplies, medical assistance and a scholarship program. Reconstruction of damaged schools for disabled students. (in the former Yugoslavia)
  • Providing vocational training, environmental conservation, water supply & construction, assistance for nutrition improvement, medical assistance, library management, educational assistance, and mosquito nets for prevention of malaria. (in Zambia)
  • Providing literacy education for adults whom did not receive public education. (in Rwanda)
  • Supporting flood victims by supplying seeds and fertilizer, farming tools, and building storehouses. (in Mozambique)
  • Providing medical assistance, running a vocational training centre for disabled, supplying wheelchairs to landmine victims and people with polio, etc. Executed landmine clearance operations. (in Cambodia)
  • Running a vocational training centre for amputees. (in Myanmar)
  • Helping the mentally retarded children through fosterage. (in Myanmar)
  • Supporting the National Medical Rehabilitation Centre for wheelchair production. (in Laos)
  • Executing mine awareness and survey in the Shomali Valley. (in Afghanistan)
  • Providing fresh food for Afghan refugees near the border. (in Tajikistan)
  • Taking part in the International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) as one of the 15 members of the Coordination Committee, as well as in the ‘Landmine MonitorE Working Group and the Victim Assistance Working Group.
  • Monitoring the performance of Japanese Government as a member of the Japan Campaign to Ban Landmines (JCBL).
