Organizational Profile: AMDA (Association of Medical Doctors of Asia), a humanitarian, non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian and non-governmental organisation, was formally founded on August 1, 1984. Its vision is global peace and development. AMDA's mission is to promote the health and well-being for the underprivileged and marginalised people in Asia and other parts of the world. These principles are embodied in its slogan "Better Quality of Life for a Better Future". In 1995, AMDA received Consultative Status from the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC). AMDA ranks as one of the largest non-governmental organisations with 30 Chapters (branches) throughout the world. AMDA continues to expand its network of co-operation with the motto of "A Global Network of Partnership for Peace through Projects with Sogo-Fujo Spirit under Local Initiatives" to promote its humanitarian activities. AMDA has worked in more than 50 countries. Presently, it is rendering services in 19 countries with a full-time staff of nearly 800 people. As many as one million people have benefited directly or indirectly from AMDA's projects. These projects are based on Sogo-Fujo, or a mutual assistance spirit emphasising local initiatives and community participation. AMDA is running different projects throughout the world in partnership and collaboration with national and international organisations, bilateral and multilateral agencies and governments. AMDA is actively co-operating with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Office of the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), United Nations Volunteers (UNV), United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organisation (WHO), World Bank (WB), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA), Ministry of Post and Telecommunication of Japan (MOPT), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Local Governments of Japan, National and International Foundations, National and International Enterprises and National and International Non-Governmental Organisations to provide humanitarian services to underprivileged communities. Activities and Achievements AMDA undertakes activities that may be classified into three fields: humanitarian emergency relief (short-term) projects, developmental (long-term) projects and global network of partnership between national and international organizations. Following are the details, in brief, of various AMDA activities in these fields.
Humanitarian Emergency Relief (Short-term) Projects Developmental (Long-term) Projects AMDA, with its program/project offices in different countries, has been striving for global peace and development through implementation of developmental projects as well as humanitarian emergency relief operations in collaboration with national and international agencies. AMDA has, so far, marked numerous accomplishments in health and social sectors. AMDA is not only working in the field of health but also overseeing numerous projects in diverse fields, including education, environment, income generation, women in development, rural development, social development and various other activities related to global peace and the well-being of the underprivileged people. Global Network of Partnership AMDA continues to expand its humanitarian network of co-operation. AMDA desires to inter-link countries with its network for humanitarian and developmental activities. AMDA makes efforts to open new Chapters (branches) and partnership with government institutions and other non-governmental organisations so that our message of "A Global Network of Partnership for Peace through Projects with Sogo-Fujo Spirit under Local Initiatives" reaches every corner of the world. Other Activities Aside from projects that promote the well being of human societies, AMDA also initiates programmes, which strengthen the relationships among its members. As such, it organises annual meetings and biennial general conventions, national and international conferences, forums, workshops, seminars, symposiums, and training programmes. Furthermore, it publishes journals, newsletters and books. (As of March 2002) |
