Organizational Profile:

Historical Background

JEN is an international non-governmental humanitarian organization founded in January 1994. It originated from an emergency assistance team organized by 7 Japanese NGOs who went to Somalia, Africa, in 1993. Subsequently, the emergency team was dissolved and reformed as Japan Emergency NGOs with a mandate to provide humanitarian assistance in former Yugoslavia.

Objectives

JEN is a networking NGO consisting of 3 Japanese NGOs, as of December 2001. Utilizing the expertise of each member NGO, the main aim of JEN is to contribute to the creation of peace in the international community by providing assistance to vulnerable people such as refugees.

Structure

With the headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, JEN has five field offices in the former Yugoslavia. Representatives from member NGOs form a steering committee which has the decision making function.

Activities

JEN has implemented the following assistance activities in the former Yugoslavia:

  • Community Service
    Emergency goods distribution, refugees-home visiting, psycho-social project, vocational training such as sawing and language, support for small agricultural business, micro credit
  • Medical
    Improvement and administrative support for local clinics, mobile medical treatment, medical goods distribution
  • Education and Support for the youth activities
    Organizing children's theatre, recreational workshop for children, language and computer training for students, school supplies distribution
  • Construction
    Shelter construction, repairing and reconstructing public buildings such as schools and hospitals
