The Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED)

The main focus of the Centre is on safeguards, public health and the sanitation aspects of disaster. CRED also studies the socio-economic and long-term effects of these large-scale disasters. CRED's activities cover applied research, the development of management tools, logistics and training.

Website includes information about CRED, brief summaries of current projects, information about courses, and access to a list of orderable publications and online publications.  Publications are available in English, French, or Spanish and cover a variety of emergency and health issues.

http://www.cred.be/emdat/ EM-DAT: The main objective of the OFDA/CRED International Disaster Database is to serve the purposes of humanitarian action at national and international levels. It is an initiative aimed to rationalize decision making for disaster preparedness, as well as providing an objective base for vulnerability assessment and priority setting.

  • Disaster Databases contains essential core data on the occurrence and effects of over 12,000 mass disasters in the world from 1900 to present. Submit your email address for future updates and click on Continue to download databases in zip format. Check out Glossary for definitions of terms common to disaster information and Guidelines, which helps explain the information and format of the database.

  • Summary Data contains various statistical reports, figures and tables, highlighting various aspects of disasters. Disaster Profiles and Map Center are currently limited to natural disasters but are set to include conflict related material in the future. Search Engine and Emergency Documentation are currently in development and unusable. Links page offers access to UN agencies and various other organizations working in disaster relief.

Journal encompasses all aspects of humanitarian assistance, from early warning and emergency provision to post-conflict peace building and the transition to development. This is inclusive of law, politics, the military, logistics, and the work of national and international organizations.

The website offers online access to Academic sources: journal articles, book reviews, and Reference sources: policy reports, manuals, and evaluations. Wide range of subjects including coordination, ethics, military, mental health, human rights, staff security, and gender.

The New Zealand Digital Library project is a research programme at The University of Waikato whose aim is to develop the underlying technology for digital libraries and make it available publicly so that others can use it to create their own collections.

Website provides access to several large document collections including humanitarian and development information. Scroll down to “humanitarian and UN collections” which includes the WHO –PAO Disaster Virtual Library and numerous other libraries. Links to guides and manuals on health, medical, food, water, nutrition, and development are downloadable. Search by subject, title, or organization.

Website offers access to factsheets, annual reports, project reports, information about missions, Field Operations Guide for Disaster Assessment and Response, Mitigation Practitioner’s Handbook and OFDA Grant Proposal Guidelines.
