GDIN is a voluntary, independent, self-sustaining, non-profit association of nations, organizations, and professionals, from all sectors of society with an interest in sharing disaster information. GDIN will make better use of existing and new technologies and negotiate institutional processes to promote global sharing of disaster information between providers and users.

The GDIN-International site provides information about the organization, projects, news, and conference information.  Projects provide information on several projects funded by GDIN. REMAPS (Relief Emergency Mapping System) project involves the development of a prototype for a standard field-based mapping software application for relief workers. A major component of this package is a Geographic Information System (GIS).  Core Data Initiative is a project on standardizing the collection of information to increase the feasibility of coordination and sharing of essential operational information.  Izmet Demonstration provides information on how to use data sharing, GIS, and other technologies to reduce the impact of disasters.
