The New Zealand Digital Library project is a research programme at The University of Waikato whose aim is to develop the underlying technology for digital libraries and make it available publicly so that others can use it to create their own collections.

Website provides access to several large document collections including humanitarian and development information. Scroll down to “humanitarian and UN collections” which includes the WHO –PAO Disaster Virtual Library and numerous other libraries. Links to guides and manuals on health, medical, food, water, nutrition, and development are downloadable. Search by subject, title, or organization.

The Overseas Development Institute is a leading independent think-tank on international development and humanitarian issues in Britain.

Website provides access to information about the Institute, research and policy programs, and publications.  Many subjects covered including human rights, staff security, education, health and nutrition, and management.  The site is searchable and maintains a good links directory.   The Humanitarian Policy Group (HPG) (located on home page) concerns policy and practice in the response to conflict, instability, disasters and associated humanitarian needs. HPG offers access to the pages below as well as other publications, activities, and links.

http://www.alnap.org The Active Learning Network on Accountability and Performance in Humanitarian Action falls under the management of the HPG.  Link offers access to work plan, books, and other publications.

http://www.odihpn.org/ Humanitarian Practice Network, also under HPG, offers an extensive link library, details of forthcoming conferences and workshops, and training and degree courses relevant to the humanitarian sector.  Publications page offers all HPN articles from 1994 onwards, together with full-text versions of Network Papers and abstracts (full texts are orderable) of Good Practice Reviews.  The Good Practice Reviews are commissioned reviews prepared by recognized specialists on different sectors (water, health, planning, security, food, registration) or activities within the humanitarian sector.

  • Disasters is a major, peer-reviewed quarterly journal reporting on all aspects of disaster studies, policy and management. The journal maintains a balance between academic papers, field reports from relief workers, case studies, and articles of general interest. Refugee Studies Centre

The Refugee Studies Centre (RSC) is part of the University of Oxford's International Development Centre at Queen Elizabeth House. Its objectives are to carry out multidisciplinary research and teaching on the causes and consequences of forced migration; to disseminate the results of that research to policy makers and practitioners, as well as within the academic community; and to understand the experience of forced migration from the point of view of the affected populations.

Some current articles are available on the website. Articles, research abstracts, conference reports and news items, present practice-oriented findings and analyse policy issues.  Articles from FMR and its predecessor the Refugee Participation Network Newsletter are available on the web. Topics have included children and youth, role of military in humanitarian work, education and training, and reproductive health. Also find information on news, events, and links.

Sphere Project

The aim of the Project is to improve the quality of assistance provided to people affected by disasters, and to enhance the accountability of the humanitarian system in disaster response.This project has developed a Humanitarian Charter and a set of universal minimum standards in core areas of humanitarian assistance: water supply & sanitation, nutrition, food aid, shelter & site planning and health services.
